5 Tips for Sleeping Baby Safely

Published by Debby Pharmacist on 22nd Jul 2023

Did you know that despite all the research, each year 3,100 infants die unexpectedly in Australia?  That’s roughly 8 babies each day!  These unexpected deaths include stillbirth, SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.  Red Nose Day is this Friday, the 24th of June 2016.  Help spread the word on how to sleep babies safely.

How to Sleep Baby Safely:

The below recommendations are provided by SIDS for Kids for SIDS risk reduction and fatal sleeping accidents.

1.  Sleep baby on their back from birth, not on their tummy or side

2.  Make sure baby sleeps with their head and face uncovered

3.  Keep baby in a smoke free environment before and after birth

4.  Ensure baby’s sleeping environment is safe day and night

5.  For the first six to twelve months, let baby sleep in their own safe sleeping safe in the same room as their adult caregiver

A Safe Sleeping Message

Whilst these recommendations have reduced the number of SIDS cases since the 1990s by 80%, we must still all remain alert and spread the word as the cause of SIDS is still unknown.
