How changes to the NDSS will affect you.

4th Aug 2024

Do you currently get diabetes products on the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)?  If yes, there are some changes coming up that might affect you.  Starting 1st July 2016 you will only be able to access your diabetes products through community pharmacies which are NDSS Access Points.  Find out what other changes to expect.

What’s Changing?

NDSS products will no longer be available from Diabetes Australia or its state and territory agents.  All NDSS products will be supplied by NDSS community pharmacies.

There will also be changes to blood glucose test strips under the NDSS.  If you are using insulin or have gestational diabetes, this will not affect you.  If you have Type 2 Diabetes and are not using insulin, you will receive an initial 6 month supply of subsidised blood glucose test strips under the NDSS.  After this, you can only access subsidised test strips if your doctor or other authorised health professional considers it necessary to use test strips.

What’s Not Changing?

The range of products available will not change.  These products include:

  • Needles
  • Syringes
  • Blood glucose test strips
  • Urine test strips
  • Insulin pump consumables

There will also be no changes in co-payment arrangements that apply.  You will also continue to receive support and advice from Diabetes Australia and local state and territory diabetes organisations about NDSS products to all NDSS registrants over the phone and through ongoing education programs.

These changes have been made to streamline the way products are delivered to pharmacies and in turn ensure that you can receive your diabetes products faster and more efficiently.  Speak to one of our pharmacists about how these changes to the NDSS will affect you.
